Somali Livelihood Initiative and Disability Organization (LIDOSOM) participated inter-agency need assessment organized by OCHA and World Vision as lead organization.
During the assessment LIDOSOM staff Field researchers did below observations: –
The IDPs in Luuq have been endeavoring to cope with impact of the protracted drought that engulfed their livestock and made their farms barren. More-worse, these IDPs are being affected by the heavy torrential rains that resulted flash floods. during the assessment our team observed several makeshift houses and latrines damaged and destroyed. We have keenly observed stagnant water in the IDP camps that can be a breeding ground for mosquito and other water borne diseases.
The remained makeshift shelters in these sites we visited, are not resilient to floods. These shelters can be inundated or destroyed by flood, leaving them homeless once again. Among the IDPs visited have limited access to food, clean water, hygiene/sanitation facilities, health, education, shelter and protection as well.
They lived a dire condition and this is worsened by the flash floods that washed away the little stock they had.
Recommendation
There is high probability of flash floods to occur in the IDP sites with little preparedness and lack of contingency plan.
A scenario where the flood swept away everything, distribution of food commodities (Raw food) is not necessary because the people may not avail utensils and fire to cook the food.
Cash Voucher is highly recommended which helps families to buy their own living.
We should take into account preparing assorted food like high energy biscuits and other readily available foods for immediate assistance. In addition to that, we need to prepare an emergence medical staff with readily available health materials to support the people in case of people drown to water or any other medical problems that may need attention.
Finally, we LIDOSOM want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Luuq district commissioner (Mr. Dahir Mohumed Nuur) for the unwavering support he portrayed to all humanitarian organizations and the community.
His dedication to making a positive impact is truly appreciated as he was working with us since the onset on the flash flood event by walking pare footed in the flood sharing the problem to the affected community of Luuq.
His continued support inspires us to work harder towards our shared goals.
Thanks for his commitment and leadership.
